Worker vs Supervisor SST Card: Which One Do You Need?
The worker card is the 40-hour path and the supervisor card is the 62-hour path. Here is how to pick the right one before you pay for the wrong one.
Short answer: the worker card is the 40-hour path, and the supervisor card is the 62-hour path. If you do the work on site, you want the worker card. If you run the people doing the work, you want the supervisor card.
Pick wrong and you end up buying a second course. Nobody on a job site enjoys that conversation with the boss.
What the rule says about hours
Local Law 196 of 2017, carried into the NYC Building Code at Section 3321, sets the site safety training hours for NYC construction. The worker card takes 40 hours of training. The supervisor card takes 62 hours.

Get the worker card if you do the work
The SST Worker card is for the people on site doing the job: laborers, carpenters, helpers, apprentices, anyone whose hands are on the work. If nobody reports to you, this is almost certainly your card.
The 40-hour SST package is the full worker path in one purchase. If you only need the SST piece, there is also the 10-hour SST Worker course.
Get the supervisor card if you run the crew
The SST Supervisor card is for the people who direct the work and answer for the crew: foremen, superintendents, anyone handing out the tasks and watching the site. It is the longer path, 62 hours, because the job carries more.
The 62-hour SST package is the full supervisor path in one purchase. For the SST piece alone, look at the 32-hour SST Supervisor course.
Still not sure? Ask the site, not the internet
The card you need depends on your role on the job. Ask your employer or the general contractor which card the site requires before you buy anything. A text to your foreman takes thirty seconds. A wrong course takes a lot longer.
Don’t buy the supervisor card just because it sounds more important. A bigger card does not make you a bigger boss. It makes you tired and a little poorer in free time.
If you have never done this before, how to get an SST card in NYC walks through the whole process from start to card.
What happens after you finish
Courses are online, self-paced, and available in English and Spanish. Do them on your phone on the train, at the kitchen table, whenever the day lets you.
Once all requirements are clear (course complete, photo and ID accepted, Training Connect certificate in), your card is processed immediately, typically in hand within 48 hours. Predictive Safety prints the card itself and ships it with a tracking number. NYC DOB does not print or mail it.
Here’s the deal from Predictive Safety: if we’re late, you get paid back. No tracking number by the end of the next business day after your requirements are clear, and your next renewal course is half off plus one replacement card is free. 48 hours, and we put our money where our mouth is.
An SST card expires 5 years from the date it was issued, so put the date somewhere you will find it.
