My SST Card Expired. Can I Still Take the 8-Hour Renewal?

An expired SST card can still be renewed in 8 hours, but only if it expired on or after May 3, 2026 and less than a year ago. Otherwise it is a new card, and more training.

Short answer: maybe. It comes down to two dates, the day your card expired and May 3, 2026. If your card expired on or after May 3, 2026 and it hasn’t been a year yet, the 8-hour renewal still works. If it expired before May 3, 2026, or more than a year ago, it can’t be renewed. Training Connect treats you as a new card, and a new card takes more training than 8 hours.

More training costs more. Better to hear that from us now than after checkout.

The date that changed everything: May 3, 2026

Local Law 10 of 2026 took effect May 3, 2026. It gave SST cards something they never had before: a grace period.

  • Your Worker card expires on or after May 3, 2026: you have 1 year after the expiration date to renew it with the 8-hour Worker renewal (8 credits).
  • Your card expired before May 3, 2026: no grace period. The law doesn’t reach back. It’s a new card.
  • Your card expired on or after May 3, 2026, but more than a year ago: the grace period ran out. It’s a new card.

One more thing about the grace period. It gives you time to renew. It does not give you a valid card. An expired card can’t be used on a job site until the renewal is finished and the new card is issued.

Check the date on the card, not the date in your head

An SST card expires 5 years from the date it was issued. Not the day you finished the class. Issuance can land weeks after the course, so guessing from your class date can put you on the wrong side of the line.

The date that counts is the one on your card and on your Training Connect record. If you can’t find the card, our guide on how to verify an SST card shows where to look it up.

Why a lapsed card means more training

The 8-hour renewal is a refresher. It assumes you already hold a live card and just need to keep it going. Once the card can’t be renewed, there is nothing left to refresh. Training Connect issues you a new card, and a new Worker card has to meet the full 40-hour requirement again.

How many hours that adds up to depends on your record. For a lot of workers, it means the 8-hour renewal plus the 10-Hour SST Worker course. For others it depends on what else is on file, like whether an OSHA card counts toward the total. Either way, it’s more than 8 hours, and more hours cost more than the renewal alone. We’d rather say that plainly than let you buy the 8-hour class and find out later it wasn’t enough.

Coming from another school? Expect a surprise or two

If you took your original training somewhere else, there’s a good chance something is missing. We see it all the time:

  • Certificates that never made it to Training Connect. You did the class. The school never recorded it. As far as the city is concerned, it didn’t happen.
  • No OSHA proof on file. The card got issued years ago, but the OSHA card behind it isn’t on your Training Connect record.
  • A school that’s no longer in good standing. NYC DOB has invalidated certificates from some schools. If that’s your school, read what happened to workers from Valor, Redcode and others.

None of this shows up on the front of your card. It shows up when the new card is being issued, which is the worst possible time to find out. That’s why we check your record at the start, not at the end.

Every situation is a little different

Two workers can walk in with the same expired card and need two different things. One just needs the renewal. The other needs a new card and has a gap from a school that closed. Same card, different fix.

So before you buy anything, talk to us. Send us a photo of your card, or just the expiration date, and tell us where you trained. We’ll look at your record and work out the fastest, fairest path to a valid card for you. If that’s the 8-hour renewal, great. If it’s more, we’ll tell you what and why before you pay a dollar.

Text a photo of your card to (646) 494-5575, email help@sst.nyc, or use our contact page. In English or Spanish, whichever is easier.

Once you’re on the right course

Courses are online and self-paced, in English and Spanish. Once all requirements are clear (course complete, photo and ID accepted, Training Connect certificate in), your card is processed immediately, typically in hand within 48 hours. Predictive Safety prints the card itself and ships it with a tracking number. NYC DOB does not print or mail it.

Next step

Card expired, or about to? Don’t guess. Text a photo of it to (646) 494-5575 and we’ll tell you which course gets you carded. If you’re inside the grace window, the 8-Hour SST Worker Renewal is online and ready today.
