NYC SST Worker Card: Get Yours Online (Without Losing Your Mind)
If you’re working on a NYC construction site, you need an SST card. Not “maybe need.” Not “should probably get.” Need. As in, the inspector will shut down the job if you don’t have it.
The good news? You can get your NYC SST Worker Card online. The bad news? You still have to sit through 10 hours of training. But we made it way less painful than other options.
What Is the NYC SST Worker Card?
The SST card (Site Safety Training card) is your proof that you completed the NYC Department of Buildings’ required safety training. Thanks to Local Law 196, if you’re a construction worker on a job site in NYC, you need one of these in your wallet.
No card? No work. It’s that simple.
The 10-hour SST is the baseline course for workers. If you’re not a supervisor, foreman, or site safety coordinator, this is what you need.
Who Needs an SST Card Online?
Pretty much everyone touching a NYC construction site:
- General laborers – You’re moving materials? You need it.
- Carpenters, electricians, plumbers – Trades workers aren’t exempt.
- Scaffold workers – Even if you have your scaffold card, you still need SST.
- Demolition workers – Tearing stuff down still counts as construction.
- HVAC techs, painters, masons – Yeah, you too.
If you’re not sure, ask your foreman. Or just get the card. Better to have it and not need it than get sent home on day one.
NYC SST Card Requirements (The Actual Rules)
Here’s what you need to know about Site Safety Training NYC:
- Complete 10 hours of NYC DOB-approved training
- Pass the final exam (it’s not that hard if you pay attention)
- Get your card mailed to you (takes about 2 weeks after you finish)
- Bring it to every job site (inspectors love checking these)
The course covers fall protection, trenching, scaffolding, electrical hazards, and other ways construction sites try to kill you. Cheerful stuff.
Can I Take the 10-Hour SST Online?
Yes. Thank the construction gods, the NYC DOB allows online SST training. You don’t have to sit in a classroom in Queens on a Saturday.
Our course is:
- 100% online – Do it from your couch, your cousin’s basement, wherever.
- Self-paced – Finish it in two days or two weeks. We don’t care.
- Mobile-friendly – Your phone works. Your tablet works. Your laptop works.
- Actually watchable – We didn’t film this in 1987 like some other courses.
Once you’re done, we process your paperwork with the DOB and mail you the physical card. You’ll also get a digital certificate immediately so you can start working while you wait.
How Long Does It Take to Get Your SST Worker Card?
The course itself? 10 hours. That’s not negotiable. The DOB sets the time requirement.
But here’s the thing: You can spread those 10 hours over as many days as you want. Do an hour at night after work. Knock out three hours on Sunday. Whatever works.
After you finish:
- Digital certificate: Immediate (download it right after passing)
- Physical SST card: 10-15 business days (we submit to NYC DOB, they print and mail it)
Need it faster? Start earlier. We can’t speed up the city bureaucracy. Nobody can.
SST Card Online: English or Spanish
We offer the 10-hour SST course in both English and Spanish.
- English course: 10-Hour Worker SST
- Spanish course: 10 Horas SST Trabajador (Español)
Same DOB-approved content. Same card at the end. Pick whichever language you learn better in.
What If I’m a Supervisor?
Different card. If you’re a superintendent, site safety manager, or competent person, you need the 30-hour SST (or 62-hour if you started before 2020).
We have that too:
Not sure which you need? Check with your employer or the job posting. When in doubt, start with the 10-hour. You can always upgrade later.
Does the NYC SST Card Expire?
Yes. Your NYC SST Worker Card is good for 5 years.
After that, you need to take an 8-hour refresher course to renew it. We have that too, but worry about the initial card first.
How Much Does the SST Card Cost?
Prices vary, but you’re looking at around $150-$250 for the online course + card processing.
Is it expensive? Yeah. Is it cheaper than getting sent home without pay because you don’t have it? Also yeah.
Think of it like this: One day of lost work costs more than the course. Get the card, keep working.
Why Take the SST Course With Us?
Look, we’re not going to pretend safety training is exciting. It’s not. But we can make it:
- Less boring – Videos that don’t look like they were shot during the Reagan administration
- Actually useful – Real scenarios, not just reading OSHA pamphlets to you
- Convenient – Online, self-paced, mobile-friendly
- Reliable – We’ve processed thousands of cards. We know what we’re doing.
Plus, we’re based in NYC. We know the DOB. We know Local Law 196. We know what inspectors look for. This isn’t our first rodeo.
Ready to Get Your SST Worker Card?
The inspector doesn’t care that you’re busy. The DOB doesn’t care that it’s annoying. And your foreman definitely doesn’t care.
Get the card. Stay on the job. Keep getting paid.

Frequently Asked Questions About NYC SST Worker Cards
Can I use my SST card in other states?
No. The NYC SST card is only valid in New York City. It’s a Local Law 196 requirement specific to NYC. If you’re working in Jersey, upstate, or anywhere else, check their requirements.
What happens if I lose my SST card?
You can request a replacement from the NYC DOB. There’s a fee (of course there is). Keep a photo of your card on your phone as backup proof while you wait for the replacement.
Do I need an SST card if I already have OSHA 10?
Yes. OSHA 10 and NYC SST are different certifications. OSHA 10 is federal. SST is specific to NYC. You need the SST card to work on NYC construction sites, even if you have OSHA training.
Can I start working before my physical card arrives?
Maybe. You’ll get a digital certificate immediately after passing. Some contractors accept that. Some want to see the physical card. Ask your employer. But you should start the course now so you’re not waiting around.
Is the SST card the same as a scaffold card?
No. The SST card is general site safety training. The scaffold card (like the 4-hour or 32-hour scaffold courses) is specific to working on scaffolding. If you work on scaffolds, you might need both. Check with your foreman.
How hard is the SST exam?
It’s not a trick exam. If you watch the videos and pay even a little attention, you’ll pass. It’s multiple choice. You can retake it if you don’t pass the first time. Relax.
