NYC SST Supervisor Card: 32-Hour Training That Won’t Destroy Your Schedule
Congratulations, you got promoted. Now you’re the one responsible when something goes wrong on the job site. And the NYC DOB wants proof you know what you’re doing.
That’s where the NYC SST Supervisor Card comes in. It’s the 32-hour version of the SST training, and it’s required for anyone in a supervisory role on NYC construction sites.
Can you do it online? Yes. Will it take up your whole weekend? Also yes. But at least you can do it in your underwear.
What Is the NYC SST Supervisor Card?
The SST Supervisor Card is your NYC Department of Buildings certification that you’ve completed 32 hours of supervisor site safety training. It’s required under Local Law 196 for anyone who supervises construction work in NYC.
This isn’t the 10-hour worker course. This is the big one. More hours, more responsibility, more headaches if you don’t have it.
If you’re a:
- Superintendent
- Foreman
- Site Safety Manager
- Competent Person
- Site Safety Coordinator
You need this card. No exceptions.
32-Hour vs 62-Hour SST: Which One Do You Need?
Here’s the deal. The city changed the rules in 2020.
If you got your first SST card BEFORE March 2020:
You needed the old 62-hour course (30-hour SST + 32-hour OSHA). That was the original Local Law 196 requirement.
If you’re getting your card NOW (after March 2020):
You need the 32-hour Supervisor SST. The DOB streamlined it. One course, 32 hours, done.
Already have the 10-hour worker card and getting promoted?
You can take the 22-hour upgrade course instead of the full 32. It fills in the gap between worker and supervisor training. Saves you 10 hours.

Can You Take the 32-Hour SST Online?
Yes. The NYC DOB allows online supervisor site safety training. You don’t need to sit in a classroom for four days straight.
Our 32-hour SST course is:
- 100% online – Your couch is now a classroom. You’re welcome.
- Self-paced – Do it over a week. Do it over a month. We don’t judge.
- Mobile-friendly – Laptop, tablet, phone – all work.
- Checkpoint system – Stop and come back anytime. Your progress saves automatically.
Once you finish, we handle the DOB paperwork and get you the physical card. You’ll also get a digital certificate immediately so you can prove compliance while waiting for the mail.
What Does the 32-Hour Supervisor SST Cover?
Everything you need to know to keep your crew safe and the DOB inspectors off your back.
The construction supervisor certification NYC curriculum includes:
- Fall protection systems – Because gravity is still undefeated
- Scaffold safety – Erection, inspection, and common violations
- Trenching and excavation – How not to bury your workers
- Electrical safety – Shocking revelations (sorry)
- Cranes and rigging – Heavy lifting, heavy consequences
- Personal protective equipment – Hard hats aren’t optional suggestions
- Hazard communication – What those safety data sheets actually mean
- Fire prevention – Hot work permits and why they matter
- Site safety plans – How to write one that won’t get rejected
- Accident investigation – What to do when something goes wrong
Plus all the OSHA regulations, NYC building codes, and DOB compliance requirements you need to know.
Is it a lot? Yeah. But so is the liability when you’re the supervisor.
How Long Does It Take to Get Your SST Supervisor Card?
The course is 32 hours. That’s not a suggestion. The DOB requires it, and the system tracks your time.
But you can spread it out:
- Hardcore mode: Finish it in 4-5 days (8 hours a day)
- Normal mode: 2-3 weeks (a few hours at night, weekends)
- Slow and steady: Take a month if you want. No expiration timer.
After you pass the final exam:
- Digital certificate: Immediate download
- Physical SST Supervisor Card: 10-15 business days (NYC DOB processing time)
Plan ahead. Don’t wait until the day before you start the new job.
SST Supervisor Training in English or Spanish
We offer the 32-hour supervisor SST in both languages:
- English: 32-Hour Supervisor SST
- Spanish: 32 Horas Supervisor SST (Español)
Same DOB-approved curriculum. Same card at the end. Learn in whichever language makes sense for you.
What’s the Difference Between SST Supervisor and Site Safety Manager?
Good question. The titles get confusing.
SST Supervisor Card (32-hour):
This is what you need if you’re supervising workers on a construction site. Foreman, super, competent person – this is your card.
Site Safety Manager (SSM):
This is a different certification. SSMs are the people responsible for the overall safety program on major sites. They need additional training and registration with the DOB.
If you’re just moving up from worker to supervisor, you need the 32-hour SST Supervisor card. If your employer is asking you to be the Site Safety Manager, that’s a whole different certification path.
Does the SST Supervisor Card Expire?
Yes. Your SST Supervisor Card is valid for 5 years.
When it’s getting close to expiration, you’ll need to take a refresher course to renew it. The refresher is shorter than the original 32 hours, but it’s still required.
Set a reminder. Letting it expire means you can’t supervise until you renew it. And that’s an awkward conversation with your boss.
How Much Does the 32-Hour SST Cost?
You’re looking at $400-$600 for most online courses, including the card processing fee.
Is it cheap? No. Is it cheaper than getting kicked off a job site because you don’t have the certification? Yes.
Some employers reimburse for it. Some require you to pay upfront and reimburse after you complete it. Ask before you enroll.
Why Take the SST Supervisor Course With Us?
We’re not going to lie to you. Thirty-two hours of safety training is not a party. But we made it as tolerable as possible:
- Updated content – Videos from this decade, not 1995
- Real scenarios – NYC-specific examples, not generic OSHA lectures
- Mobile-friendly platform – Do it on your phone if you want
- Progress tracking – See exactly how many hours you have left (countdown to freedom)
- Fast certificate delivery – Digital cert immediately, physical card in ~2 weeks
Plus, we’re based in NYC. We know the DOB. We know Local Law 196. We know what the inspectors are looking for. This is what we do.
What If I Already Have OSHA 30?
Great. But you still need the NYC SST Supervisor Card.
OSHA 30 is a federal certification. The SST card is a New York City requirement. They’re different. You need both if you want to supervise on NYC sites.
The good news? There’s some overlap in content, so the SST course won’t feel completely foreign if you already took OSHA 30.
Ready to Get Your SST Supervisor Card?
The promotion came with more money and more responsibility. The card is part of the deal.
Get it done. Get it over with. Get back to work.

Frequently Asked Questions About SST Supervisor Cards
Can I supervise with just the 10-hour worker SST card?
No. If you’re in a supervisory role (foreman, super, competent person), you need the 32-hour supervisor card. The 10-hour is only for workers. The DOB will cite your employer if they find a supervisor without the proper certification.
What’s the difference between the 32-hour and 62-hour SST?
The 62-hour was the old requirement (before March 2020). It combined the 30-hour SST with OSHA 32. The new requirement is just the 32-hour SST course. If you’re starting now, you need the 32-hour. Simpler and shorter.
Do I need to renew my SST Supervisor card?
Yes, every 5 years. You’ll take a shorter refresher course (usually 8 hours) to renew it. Don’t let it expire – you can’t supervise with an expired card.
Can I take the 32-hour course if I don’t have the 10-hour yet?
Yes. The 32-hour is standalone. You don’t need the 10-hour first. The 32-hour covers everything a supervisor needs, including the worker-level content.
How hard is the supervisor SST exam?
Harder than the 10-hour, but still passable if you pay attention. It’s multiple choice. You need to actually understand the content, not just sit through the videos. If you fail, you can retake it.
Can I use my NYC SST Supervisor card in other states?
No. It’s only valid in New York City. Other states and cities have their own requirements. If you’re working outside NYC, check what they require.
What happens if I start the course but don’t finish in time?
Your progress saves. You can come back and finish whenever you want. There’s no expiration on in-progress courses. Life happens – we get it.
