Save $2, Lose $2,624: What a Slow SST Card Really Costs

A cheaper SST course can cost you far more if the card shows up late. Read the schools' own published timelines, the wage math, and what we promise.

Illustration: a hard hat hangs on a locked scaffold gate beside an empty time clock while a calendar page blows away.

Somebody offers you the same course for a couple of bucks less. Same hours. Same card at the end.

You take it. Of course you take it. You’re not an idiot.

Then you wait. And the card doesn’t show up. And the job starts Monday.

Nobody puts the waiting on the price tag. So let’s do it for them.

The price tag leaves out the best part

A course price tells you what leaves your wallet today. It says nothing about the paycheck you don’t get while you’re standing there with a certificate and no card.

The card is the product. The course is just the road to it. If the card is late, the road went nowhere, and somebody still has to explain that to your foreman.

What schools say about their own card timing

We went and read the schools’ own pages. No reviews, no ratings, no gossip. Just what each one publishes about when the card arrives. Every line below is theirs, linked to their page, checked in October 2026.

  • OSHA Training School says: “The Physical SST card will be mailed within 7 business days.” It also lists a digital copy “within 2 business days after document verification.” (source)
  • NYC District Council of Carpenters Training Center says: “Once approved, your card will be mailed to your address within 3-5 weeks.” (source)
  • PDH STAR says: “Processing time varies, depending on which provider you have taken your training with.” (source)

On that same PDH STAR page, the fine print reads that the applicant “shall pay an additional $75 reprint and processing fee,” and “We are not responsible if the card is not delivered to you for whatever reason.” Read that last one twice. Then read it out loud to your crew.

To be fair, these are promises, not measurements. We’re not saying any of these schools is late. We’re saying that’s what they put in writing. A written “varies” is a written “varies.”

Seven business days is more than a week of work. Three to five weeks is most of a month. You can plan around a date. You can’t plan around “varies.”

The math, with the wage we assumed

Here’s the illustration. Label it as one, because it is.

The Bureau of Labor Statistics (May 2023) puts the mean hourly wage for construction laborers in the New York-Newark-Jersey City area at $32.80. (BLS) That’s an average. Your actual rate may be lower or higher. Union and trade wages usually run higher. Use your own number.

  • One 8-hour day: 8 x $32.80 = $262.40
  • Seven working days (the 7 business days above): 7 x $262.40 = $1,836.80
  • Ten working days, two weeks: 10 x $262.40 = $2,624

Now put a $2 saving next to that. One lost day eats the saving about 130 times over.

One more honest caveat. This only counts if you can’t work without the card, and you actually had a job waiting. If you were between jobs anyway, the math is softer. But if you’re reading this because a start date is coming, you already know which kind of week this is.

Where the real money hides

The wait isn’t the only line item. Watch for these before you pay anybody:

  1. When does the card ship? Ask for a number of days, in writing.
  2. Is there a reprint fee? And what counts as “your fault”?
  3. What if it never arrives? Some pages say flat out they’re not responsible. Find out before checkout, not after.
  4. Who do I call? A human, with a phone number.

A cheap course with a fuzzy answer to any of those isn’t cheap. It’s a loan, and you’re the one paying the interest.

What we do instead

Look, we’re not going to pretend we’re the only ones who care. But here’s the deal on our side.

Once your requirements are clear (course done, photo and ID accepted), your card is processed immediately, typically in hand within 48 hours. We built the whole process around being the fastest, because we know what a day costs you.

Every card ships with a tracking number, so you’re not guessing and you’re not calling anybody to ask where it is.

And if we’re late processing, we pay for it. Our 48-hour promise: half off your next renewal and a free replacement card. Not a “sorry for the inconvenience” email. An actual make-good.

Plus the basics. Satisfaction guaranteed or your money back. The fine print is short: no refund once we’ve entered your certificates on Training Connect, since that’s permanent, and OSHA courses aren’t refundable once you’ve started them. Details are on the guarantee page.

Want the full picture of what’s required before you start? The worker card page and our cost breakdown lay it out.

The short version

  • A cheaper course isn’t cheaper if the card is late.
  • Schools publish their own timelines. Read them. “Within 7 business days,” “3-5 weeks” and “varies” are three very different Mondays.
  • One lost day at the sample $32.80 wage is $262.40. Ten days is $2,624.
  • Ask where the card is, when it ships, and what happens if it doesn’t arrive.

Gravity is undefeated. So is a Monday start date. Take the course, get the card, be on the site.
