Working On or Near Scaffolds? Yeah, You Need This.
Scaffolds are everywhere on NYC job sites. And the DOB has very strong opinions about who can be on them. If you’re working on scaffolding, assembling it, inspecting it, or even walking under it, this course is required. No card, no scaffolding. Those are the rules.
This is the 4-Hour Supported Scaffold User and Refresher (SCA-212 or SCA-211). It works as both initial training AND refresher training. First time? Take it. Card expiring? Take it again. Same course, same card, different use cases.
📋 The Deal
- 4 hours – Shortest course we offer. Still required.
- 100% online, self-paced – Take it on your couch, on your lunch break, at 2am. We’re not judging.
- Mobile-friendly – Phone, tablet, laptop. Pick your device.
- 📸 Camera required – Phone or computer, doesn’t matter. We need to verify you’re actually taking the course. DOB compliance thing.
- Scaffold User Certificate – Valid for 4 years. Keep it with your other cards.
- Counts toward SST credit – This course gives you SST hours. Double win.
- No prerequisites – First day on a scaffold? Welcome. We’ll teach you.
🎯 What You’ll Learn
Scaffolding looks simple. It’s not. Here’s what we cover:
Scaffold Basics
- Types of supported scaffolds (frame, tube-and-coupler, system – yes, there are differences)
- Weight limits and load capacity (spoiler: don’t overload it)
- Proper assembly and disassembly (there’s a right way and a “hope you said goodbye to your family” way)
Hazard Recognition
- What a sketchy scaffold looks like (wobbly = bad)
- Fall hazards and how to avoid them (guardrails exist for a reason)
- Electrical hazards near scaffolds (scaffolds conduct electricity – fun fact!)
Regulatory Requirements
- OSHA scaffold standards (they’re picky about this stuff)
- NYC DOB rules (even pickier)
- Inspection requirements (daily, weekly, after weather events)
- When to call the competent person (not you, unless you’re certified)
Safe Work Practices
- How to get on and off a scaffold without dying
- Tool and material handling (don’t drop things on people below)
- Weather considerations (wind + tall scaffold = bad idea)
- Personal fall protection on scaffolds (sometimes guardrails aren’t enough)

❓ FAQ (The Stuff Everyone Asks)
Is this for initial training or renewal?
Both. If you’ve never taken scaffold training, this is your initial course. If your card’s expiring, this is your refresher. Same course either way.
What’s the difference between SCA-212 and SCA-211?
Same course, different codes depending on whether it’s initial or refresher. The DOB will sort it out. You just take the course.
Does this count toward my SST hours?
Yes. This gives you SST credit. Check with the DOB for specifics on your situation.
Can I do this on my phone?
Yup. Camera required for verification, but fully mobile-friendly.
How long is the certificate good for?
4 years. Mark your calendar. Set a reminder. Don’t let it expire.
What if I’m just walking under scaffolding, not working on it?
Then you probably don’t need this. But if you’re spending significant time under scaffolds or near them, your employer might require it anyway. Ask them.
Do I need this if I’m already a supervisor?
If you’re working on or near scaffolds? Yes. Supervisor card doesn’t cover scaffold-specific training. This does.
What if I fail the quiz?
Retake it. No limit. We’re not trying to trick you.
